Our Lady of Solitude Cloister is an Eastern Catholic monastic community of the Melkite Greek-Catholic Eparchy of Newton. The Cloister is located on a forty acre farm in the “endless mountain” section of northeast Pennsylvania.
We belong to an Eastern Catholic Church. We are in communion with other Churches that are “Catholic” — the largest being the Roman Catholic Church. Melkite Greek Catholics trace their origins to the See of Antioch founded by the Apostle St. Peter. It was at Antioch that the Disciples of Christ were first called “Christians”. We are of the Byzantine rite — a liturgical patrimony that we received from the Church of Constantinople.
Our foundation is dedicated to the Mystery of the Annunciation. We seek to contemplate the Eternal Word Incarnate among us: in Sacramental Encounters and amongst those who visit us. Daily we keep our hands raised in fervent prayer for the sanctification and protection of the family and the right to life of those most vulnerable; especially the child in the womb.
